So, today, I went to see The Last Airbender. From what I'd read, the latest train-wreck in M. Night Shyamalan's film career.
Maybe it was because I didn't go in there with high hopes because of the bad reviews, or the fact that I'm just a take it as it comes kind of person. But I did enjoy the film.
Of course, I found that the pacing in the first half of the film was complete and utter rubbish, and the dialogue was not all that good.
Acting too, wasn't as great as I'd expected too. Well, from most of the cast. Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone were two of the main actors that I thought did shit in the movie.
Though, I did find that people are being quite hard on young Noah Ringer. He's a new guy to acting and hollywood. A Texas Regional Champion in Tae Kwon Do I find that, despite his inexperience, he was probably one of the more sound actors of the film.
Of course, I'm not saying he's great. There's a few kinks to be fixed, kinks that, in all honesty, M. Night should have seen himself and corrected. From the interviews I've seen from Noah, he's a really decent guy, and is amazing in martial arts. I could see the substantial difference between him and his cast mates in that perspective, from the way that he holds his stance, to everything martial arts related.
Apparently, it's too *obsessive* to take time to notice the small things. That's what my sister told me anyway when we went to see it. Meh, I don't know. If you're not going to read a lot into it, how is it ever going to make sense. I like looking really big into things, it open a whole new world of possibilities for you.
So, moving back to chosen subject.
I found that, okay, the movie wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be. The effects weren't all that amazing (I saw it in 2D if your wondering), acting did need some work, directing was kinda awful, pacing for the first part was rubbish.
But there were good things about it, the fight scenes were amazing (Especially if it was coming from Noah Ringer), the music was another thing I loved about the film. There were some scenes where the music just made everything all the better.
One of the funniest things about the film, which I think wasn't supposed to be all that funny, was the part after the moon spirit was killed and revived and everyone's staring at the moon, and suddenly this water tribe dude appears out of nowhere and tackles one of the fire nation to the floor.
Now that part I openly laughed at.
So, it was an enjoyable film, just sit back and go with the flow. Don't think too much about what's happening and you'll enjoy it all the more.
I think I might need to see it again to get a better opinion on it though :D
Rating: 5/10
Taking all into consideration, that is a decently good rating.
So, before I go, I've been watching some stuff for the film, like promotional, have you noticed that even though Noah Ringer plays the main character of the film, he hardly does any promotional stuff for it. Now that it's his choice or anything. But, in the KCA's, Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone did the slimebending thing. None of them didn't really seem to care all that much about Noah too.
I've seen some group photo-shoots for them too, and they seem to treat Noah Ringer with a little less respect than they do for everyone else, same with Dev Patel (who also did quite well in the film), that they never seem to get the same amount of attention as Nicola and Jackson?
Meh, maybe I'm thinking way too much into it.
I probably am.
Before I leave. I also won't be blogging tomorrow. I'm sleeping over a friends house and I won't have access to a computer (we're sleeping in a tent in her back garden. What great fun that's going to be, right?
Night!
I hope everyone else outs there has a better Thursday night than me...
I liked the movie too.
ReplyDeleteI think you were right about Ringer. Did you see his interview on u2b? He seemed pretty excited about the possibility of getting slime bent.
Too bad he didn't get to do that.
He was great in the movie. I almost cried at the end when he thought about his teachers and friends before the final battle scene (pretty epic score there by J Newton btw).
P from US
I thought that those last scene's were immense. I'm definitely going to see it again. Though, when is another question.
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting to find the score out here in the UK. I just loved the music. I thought it was immense.
I did see that interview, and thought that it was quite mean of Nickelodeon to have kept him in the dark like that. And he should have been the one doing it in the first place because he is the Avatar. I'm totally stoked to see more of him in the film industry or anything really. His martial arts were amazing, especially coming from a kid so young!
That scene at the end with the bowing really got my going, I thought that part was really the high point of the movie, because Aang had accepted that he was the Avatar and there was nothing he could do about it, and it was like he was accepting the loss of his airbending friends, but is gaining new ones and that it's time for him to face his destiny. Again, I probably looked too much into such small scenes, but to me they held so much power.
Sorry for the long comment. I kinda got carried away!
