Chapter 28
I was out of the hospital the next day. I hate hospitals, did I ever mention that? Lately, that’s all I seem to be doing is spending my time in the hospital and it’s really starting to get to me.
I have an appointment later on today with my therapist. She’s going to be demanding as ever. She still hasn’t agreed to do the hypnotising me thing yet, but I’ll work on that in the session. I have now got plenty of reasons to need to go and find my friends; it’s just that I can’t mention them.
Another thing that seems to be really getting to me lately is my headache. I’ve had it since I woke up and it’s not really showing any signs of leaving either, it just gets worse and worse.
Not many words were exchanged when I arrived home. I’m sure that if it were my first time out of the hospital like it had been when I was first there, when Inspector Malcolm took me there it would have been a different story.
I’d disappointed them. There was no use in hiding that fact. Maggie herself had even shown to me that she didn’t want this Danny back, that she wanted her old Danny back.
Jim hadn’t even taken the day off work to welcome me home. Jamie said that he said that he’d used up a lot of free days when I’d gone missing the first time and couldn’t take any more days off.
The only reason Maggie was home to see me come home was because she was on some stupid ‘recovery’ week thing. I wasn’t sure what they called it. It just meant she was allowed to stay home to ‘mind’ me, to make sure I don’t overdose again…
When did life get complicated?
My head was on the verge of explosion when I reached my therapists office. She receptionist that’s always there looked at me with a sad smile. I guess news travels fast. I wouldn’t know. I’m not allowed to watch TV.
Maggie thinks it’s a bad influence for me to watch it. I think it’s because she’s afraid that there are things about me there.
“Danny Smith? She’s waiting for you.” The receptionist said, pointing towards the room behind her.
“Thanks.” I replied, at least I didn’t have to wait with the rich snobs whose only reason of going there were to gripe about how bad their life is. ‘My money’s in this bank account, this bank account and this bank account. I’m not sure how to handle the stress of it all’, or something ridiculous like that.
“Ah, Danny. I see you’re doing okay?” It was a question more than a statement. Of course, I must have looked like crap. Who wouldn’t?
“Do I look okay?” I asked sarcastically.
“Not really.” She answered honestly.
“Well, there’s your answer.” My head was just pounding away. I reached up to it and attempted to massage it.
“Headache?”
“I don’t feel the need to answer that.”
“What kind of headache is it?”
“I don’t know, a headache kind of headache?”
“Did you mention it to the doctor?”
“Why are you analyzing me?” I asked annoyed.
“It’s my job.” She answered leaving no room to elaborate. “So did you tell the doctor?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It wasn’t hurting that bad then.”
“So, its really hit full force in the last few minutes?”
“Well, since I got home really.”
“Have you felt anything different about yourself?”
“Like what?” I questioned, looking at her quizzically. What was she trying to get at?
“You know, feelings of déjà vu, like you recognize some things?”
“No.”
“Oh, right.”
“What did you think was going to happen?”
“Nothing. It’s okay. I’m worried, that’s all.”
“You seem to be worrying more than my mum does.”
“Why? Is there a problem between you and your mother?”
“Not really.”
“So, why doesn’t she care?”
“It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
“It’s my job to worry about it.” She sighed; she looked at me with a look close to pity. I didn’t like it.
“Look, remember when I first came here and you mentioned about hypnosis?”
“Yeah…” She answered slowly, looking at my curiously.
“Would you be willing to do it now?”
“Now?”
“Yeah, and there’s one other thing.” I said, I wasn’t sure whether I should smirk or not. It wasn’t really a smirk situation.
“What’s that?” She asked uncertainly.
“I’ve been thinking. Maybe it would help a lot if we went back to the place I woke up in.” I said. “Back to the ranch house.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“How do you expect it all to work out? I’ll need a doctor in case it all goes wrong. Inspector Malcolm would want to be there and I’m sure he has better things to be doing. I have other clients to see. It takes a bit longer of a process than just coming up with the idea out of the blue!” She nearly shouted.
“Well, we can arrange it all now, and we can do it when everyone’s free, preferably today.”
“Why today?”
“I have a feeling that if we don’t do it today, the chance will be lost.”
“Really? What makes you think that?”
“It’s just a gut instinct.”
She sighed. I guess that was a sign that I’d won. “All right.” She said, “I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thank you!”
“Did you complete your mission, warlock?” The dark voice said.
“I did, sir.” Jenna’s voice rang out in the darkness.
“Good, everything is set up. How much of the wall did you take down?”
“The amount you told me. He won’t get any further than before the incident.”
“He won’t remember the tome?”
“No, sir.”
“Good.”
“What about them, sir?”
“They do not worry me. They have no made a move.”
Jenna did not answer. The man before her, Nicholas, was his name known to the people, magicians, though no one was sure if this was his real name. He was old, though he did not show it. There were many stories on why he hasn’t aged, but there are so many there is no way to tell which is real and which is not.
“You are dismissed.” Nicholas said in a frosty voice. He was a tall man, and slim. He had an athletic build, but he was not too muscular, his true eye colour was unknown as he could change it at will, his true appearance was unknown as he preferred the form he wore now, he did not want people to know who he truly was. But he was powerful. More powerful that the people around him knew. He only ever showed a fraction of his power. He liked being on top and everyone fearing him. It made him feel good. Walking to the other side of the room, he looked and the cold wall in front of him, soon, you will be back here. I will not let you go this time. He thought, smirking to himself. He had it all planned out.
They’d arranged that the hypnosis would take place tonight. Mrs Connors last client left her at 6:30 and she would be here by 7:30. Inspector Malcolm finished at 5:00, but would be here at the same time too. And Dr Jenkins, the doctor who had seen him first when he’d woken up was coming by the same time too.
The thing that had surprised him most though was Maggie. Maggie had volunteered herself to go too. Danny was expecting to go alone, and take a ride with one of the people going, or was expecting for Jamie to force her way into it.
Jamie had wanted to go, but Maggie had insisted that she stay home, that it was only right that Maggie went.
Jamie backed down eventually. She gave me a look that said ‘be careful.’ I guess she was also trying to warn me about not saying too much, but I guess I wasn’t really going to have much choice when I was ‘under’ so to speak.
I looked at the clock. ‘7:12’, it read.
A little after 7:30 they all arrived. We’d decided to take one car as it seemed a lot easier of everyone just tailing each other. They were relying on me to get them there. I hoped I remembered the way there/
Did I forget to mention that my skull felt ready to burst from my skin? I was burning up now too. I’m hoping I didn’t catch some sickness at the hospital. Dr Jenkins gave me a strange look. He’s been giving me strange looks all night.
“You okay?” He asked casually.
“Yeah, just a headache.”
“Oh, right.” I don’t think he knew how to react. He’s seemed kinda edgy since he got here. I’ve just put it down to after work stress.
Luckily, I remembered the way there. Barely. I looked at the falling down ranch house properly for the first time. It was literally falling down. The windows were broken, and it looked really unclean. It was made of wood, but the foundations were still standing strong, even if the rest of the house wasn’t.
Walking closer to the ranch house, my headache got worse and worse. I would have said something, but I needed to do this. Doing this meant I could be one step closer to Hayley and Jesse. I could deal with a headache for one day. I could deal with this headache for the rest of my life if it meant
We arrived into the ranch house and everything was the same as I’d left it. There were splats of my blood all over the walls and floor. Making it look like there’d been a struggle here. A struggle I didn’t remember. The couch was overturned, also the way I’d left it. It was all the same. Right down to the dripping tap, where I’d desperately tried to get a drink of water when I’d first woken up. But the water didn’t run much faster than it was now.
It was just a wreck. A wreck that I’d contributed to.
It was obvious by the looks of things that no one had lived here in a long time. Everything was ‘outdated’ as it was usually put. Everything was old. But everything held a story. The house itself had many stories. Just one glance at it could tell you that.
“Let’s do this.” Mrs Connors said, she pulled the couch up into the position is should be in and made sure that it was okay to sit on. She then pulled out a video camera. Something I had to wonder about.
“What’s the camera for?” I asked.
“We’re going to tape it. It might come in handy.”
I didn’t answer her. Maggie stood at the back of the group with Inspector Malcolm. Dr Jenkins walked towards Mrs Connors, figuring he’d probably be needed if anything went wrong with me.
The strange thing is, I didn’t feel nervous. I wanted this so bad that it hurt. I couldn’t let my friends down and I was damned if something so small held me back.
I had to be strong, for my friends.
“Lay on the couch here, please, Danny.” Mrs Connors instructed.
“Inspector, could you look after the camera please, turn it on when I say so and turn it off when I say so?”
“Certainly.” The inspector said.
“Dr Jenkins. Stay close to me, so if anything happens to Danny you’ll be there to help.”
“Okay.” He replied, standing closer to the therapist.
I laid down on the sofa, my heart pounding in rhythm to my head.
“Are you sure your ready for this?” Mrs Connors asked.
“Yes.” I answered determined. I was not going to miss out on this opportunity. She’d use it against me if I turned away now. I did not know whether I should be surprised that Maggie said nothing and stayed where she was, hiding in the back of the room. Just looking at me.
“Here we go. Start the video camera.” Mrs Connors ordered, not waiting for an answer she continued. “Close your eyes, Danny.” Closing my eyes I listened to her voice.
“Relax your body. Listen to me. Breathe in with your nose and out with your mouth. Let your eyes get heavy. Now, do a little test for me. Tense your muscles for ten seconds and then relax them. Tense and relax.
“Now, I’m going to count from 100 to 0 whilst tapping my foot to every beat. 100…97 you’re feeling sleepier…83 your eyes are heavier…. 50 your letting your mind drift off, but focus on the sound of my voice…37 your even sleepier…20 you’re almost there, your sleepier and sleepier every second…3,2,1. You’re sleeping.
“Now listen to me, you’re in a beautiful place. There are clouds everywhere. Let the clouds cover your body. They’re cold, right?”
“Yes.”
“Now, you’re feeling happy. But I want you do something for me, Danny. Remember the time you woke up in he ranch house. I want you to picture it for me.”
I remembered waking up here. Everything was covered in blood. I remember being scared. I remember the fear, the blood and the confusion. I did not know who I was. I didn’t know where I was. I remember struggling to stand up everything was hurting. There was blood all over me. Scared. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know anyone!
“No, can you remember anything before that?”
It was dark. Laughing. Screaming.
Voices.
I looked around me and found that everything was dark; I couldn’t see anything besides a wall in front of me, slowly crumbling down.
“The tome.” I heard in the distance, but I couldn’t see anything. I frantically looked around. There was nothing here besides darkness. I needed to get out of hear. I was scared.
“Danny!” I heard faintly. “You’re going to wake up in 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1!”
“AH!” I screamed, my eyes snapping open to see everyone staring at me with fear in their eyes.
Oh, God, what had I done?
And for some reason the formating is all wrong. And do you know what? I don't really care to go back and fix it now :D
